What to Expect Year-Round

The weather in the East Kimberley isn’t just a backdrop, it’s part of the adventure. Each season transforms the landscape and defines the experiences you will have. From crystal-clear skies in the dry season to dramatic storms and cascading waterfalls in the wet, every shift in climate transforms the landscape and the adventures you’ll have. Knowing what to expect, ensures your journey is as comfortable as it is unforgettable.

Dry Season (April/May–August)

This is the best time to visit. Days are warm and sunny, averaging in the low 30°C range, while nights are pleasantly cool. Clear skies mean perfect conditions for hiking, cruising, and exploring iconic attractions like Lake Argyle, El Questro, and Purnululu National Park. Most tours and activities are open, so book early to avoid missing out.

What to pack:

> Cool, casual clothing
> Wide-brimmed hat
> Comfortable walking shoes
> 2-litre water bottle
> Light jumper or jacket for cooler evenings

Build-Up (September–December)

The Kimberley heats up! Temperatures climb to around 40°C, and humidity rises as storm clouds gather without much rain. This dramatic season, known locally as the “build-up,” creates an electric atmosphere with spectacular skies and unforgettable sunsets. Some tours begin to wind down due to unpredictable conditions, so flexibility is key.

What to expect:

> Hot days and warm nights
> Limited tours and attractions due to unpredictable conditions

What to pack:

> Light, breathable clothing
> Sun protection essentials
> Plenty of water for hydration

Wet Season (January–March/April)

The Kimberley bursts into life. Heavy rains transform the region into a lush paradise with roaring rivers, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant greenery. While road access and tours are limited, this is the time for photographers and adventurers seeking raw, untamed beauty. The scenery is unforgettable. Expect warm days, high humidity, and occasional storms.

What to pack:

> Quick-dry clothing
> Waterproof gear
> Flexible plans for changing conditions

No matter when you visit, the Kimberley offers something extraordinary.

Seasons through the Eyes of Miriwung Culture

In the East Kimberley, the concept of seasons goes far beyond the simple “wet” and “dry.” The Miriwung people, the Traditional Owners of this land,  recognises three major seasons – Nyinggiyi-mageny (wet weather), Warnka-mageny (cold weather), and Barndenyirriny (hot weather) – each with its own unique stages marked by changes in plants, animals, and the land itself. For more information about the Miriwung Seasons: Miriwung Calandar
