Help Protect Western Australia’s Unique Environment

When you travel into Western Australia, you’re entering one of the most pristine and protected environments in the country. To keep it that way, we all play a vital role in stopping pests, weeds and diseases from crossing our borders, often hidden in everyday items carried from interstate.

WA’s agricultural industries are the backbone of our economy, and our natural landscapes thrive thanks to the State’s isolation, which has helped keep out many harmful plants, insects and diseases found elsewhere in Australia. To preserve this valuable advantage, strict quarantine measures are in place, supported by dedicated Quarantine WA officers who work around the clock to safeguard our borders.

As you enter Western Australia from the Northern Territory, you’ll pass through a 24-hour Road Border Checkpoint, your chance to help protect the Kimberley and greater WA. Some items are restricted and may need to be surrendered in quarantine bins or handed directly to an inspector. Remember, significant penalties apply for failing to declare RISK ITEMS.

Your cooperation ensures WA remains beautiful, productive and biosecure for generations to come.

And just so you know — there is no checkpoint when leaving WA for the Northern Territory.

If you have any questions during your journey, the friendly, local team at the Kununurra Visitor Centre is always here to help!
