What are the road conditions?
Planning to explore the Kimberley by road? You’re not alone, it’s one of the most common questions we receive!
But in true Kimberley fashion, the answer is never simple. Conditions across the region can change in a heartbeat, and will vary throughout the Kimberley.
Unsealed roads depend heavily on recent weather, when they were last graded, and how many travellers have passed through. Floodways can rise quickly and drop just as fast. It’s part of what makes Kimberley driving such a memorable adventure, but also why preparation is absolutely essential.
The Kimberley is spectacular, remote and unpredictable, offering challenges even for seasoned drivers. Before you hit the road, make sure you understand not just your vehicle’s capabilities, but your own confidence and experience behind the wheel. And if you’re towing, remember at the end of each day you are going to want a bed to sleep in.
For the most up-to-date and reliable information, please check the road report links below, and if you feel the need to talk to a real local who knows the region inside out, our friendly Kununurra Visitor Centre team is only a phone call away on (08) 9168 1177.
