Discover

Kununurra is a gateway to the Northern Territory (Top End) and as such, is able to share information on areas close to the WA/NT border.

The Northern Territory is known for its tropical weather, rich indigenous culture, national parks and laid-back lifestyle. It is home to an eclectic mix of cultures whose outdoor lifestyle is complemented by brilliant sunsets, fantastic fishing and a colourful calendar of outdoor events.

Darwin is the Northern Territory's multi-cultural capital, famed for its markets and festivals, Asian cuisine and massive natural harbour. It is also the perfect base from which to explore the natural treasures of World Heritage-listed Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks as well as the Tiwi Islands.

Kakadu National Park, the largest in Australia, is situated 250 kilometres from Darwin on the Arnhem Highway. Renowned internationally for its natural and cultural wonders, Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of Aboriginal rock art sites in the world.

Closest to Kununurra is the Katherine region, a vast network of rivers, escarpments and gorges that weave through sprawling plains of cattle stations, national parks and reserves. In Nitmiluk National Park, the mighty Katherine River slices through towering sandstone cliffs to form the world famous Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk). Keep River National Park
Located 51 kilometres east of Kununurra just inside the Northern Territory. The most comfortable time to visit the park is from May to August or in the dry season as it is known locally. There are a variety of things to see and do in the Keep River National Park from aboriginal rock art sites, to spectacular geological formations, numerous bushwalks of varying distance all within a diverse array of habitats and all relatively close together. The geological formations are primarily sandstone very similar in structure as both Purnululu and Mirima National Parks. Keep River National Park has two camping areas (camping fees apply) and facilities include tables, BBQ's and pit toilets. Water is available at Jarnem and along the road just past the Ranger's Station turnoff.
