Western Australia is free from many of the insect and animal pests, plant and animal diseases and weeds, which are present elsewhere in Australia.
Therefore, there are strict quarantine laws on what can be bought into WA.
The Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia's Quarantine WA service, operates border checkpoints as a first line of defense against incursions of unwanted pests, weeds and diseases, which could arrive on freight, cargo and other items brought in from interstate. Road checkpoints at Kununurra and Eucla operate 24 hours a day throughout the year.
